Post by canada » Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:24 pm

Hi-
In Sk, canada. Nothing but hunting and fishing here...
Looking to buy the best smoker for the money. price 400-700.
Can you experts please advise.
Would like to use year round, and have option to use my own wood, rather than the wafers.

Thank you!!!

Weber Smokey Mountain or WSM for short. For the price you stated and even if you did not state a price the WSM is one of the best smokers for beginners to get into smoking.

My vote goes to the WSM. I did allot checking around before I purchased my first smoker and the WSM came out on top. They’re well made and there’s lots of information on this forum and the web on how to use them.

+1 for the WSM

I have always been a foodie and always buy the best i can afford and the WSM is no exception. For a foodie or not, it is definitly the best smoker you can buy in that price range.

One more vote for the WSM. It sounds like you have the budget for a 22" version if you want some real capacity.
Where are you located? Send me a PM if you want to see one in person.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but check out

As you have read here, there are a lot of votes for the WSM. Its a good cooker but doesn't lend itself to cooking with your own wood. Its primarily a charcoal cooker. I would suggest taking a look at one of the small offsets if you wish to have a stick burner. I don't know the retail market where you are; somebody will chime in here to direct you, I'm sure.

another for the WSM. Peter is correct also, it is all in what you want.
I am a WSM user and she really took care of me over the weekend. The reason why I choose the WSM is the cost, set it and forget it, and compact size. It is also perfect for RVing. It is a smoker, and a grill in one. I use my WSM for alot of things.
The only issue I have with the WSM is the fact that you have to stack the food with one rack ontop another. I found this an issue this weekend when I was cooking alot of different types of food with different cook times (butt, chicken, ABT's and beans). Unstack, restack, real pain in the butt. With an offset all food is accessable at any time.

BTW get the 22". It's worth the extra buck, I wish it was out when I bought mine.
sit down, shut up and smoke some butts!!!!

Check out the Big Green Egg. People who use it, swear by it!! It's heavy as all get-out, but is sensational!
