Had a huge branch from a Manitoba Maple tree come down in the storm yesterday.
Is this kind of wood ok for smoking? It seems a bit soft, so figure I better ask before using on good Q
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Manitoba Maple for Smoking?
Lets bump this to the top, I'm interested if anyone has used this as well.
As everyone always talks about "sugar maple" as the best maple to use, I tried silver maple and found no difference, it's great. Boxelder are in the same family as other maples, maybe it tastes the same as well?

If you're using a small chunk of soft maple for flavor in a wsm it's ok. For heat in a big cooker it don't cut it.I find the soft maples give off a dirty smoke If you are gonna use maple, stick to the hard varieties. Bryan

Even for the stove its crappy. I use it for fall/spring shoulder seasons. I put it on par with poplar. Its light, and burns fast with not much heat. I try to give it away first when people ask for wood.
