On the complete list of results, some of you might recognize the name, Bar-B-Que Skis. This is Tom and his son and friend and they came up from Michigan to do the Merlin contest last year. Turns out they were set up right beside us in Grand Rapids and we had a good visit with them again. They wanted us to say 'hi' to all the folks they met in Merlin and hoped that the winds were calm for us this year!

Must of sold out before he got to the comp.

Hey Tim:
We did this event once before; I believe it was in '05, and we pretty much decided that we'd never do it again. There were only 4 portable washrooms for 40 teams, locals were rummaging through your trash for empties, parking rules were erratically enforced.... bottom line, we weren't impressed at all.
I had no intention of ever going back, but Jason and S&B went last year or year before and said that they'd made some real strides in getting this better organized, so we signed on at the last minute.
I think they did a really good job this year. There definitely are more washrooms available and they were cleaned at least twice over the 36 hours of the contest. Garbage was picked up at regular intervals, ash and grease drop barrels were close to all teams and ice (20 lb bags, $4) was made available for 15 minutes at the top of every hour both Friday and Saturday. The event is kind of split between two main areas, one being the Taste of Grand Rapids, which is where local restaurants had their specialty items for sale and also where the main stage was. Then on the other side of the fence, where the ball park is, that is where the 40 bbq teams set up. On the Friday night they had a Canadian country artist on stage (Adam Gregory; my wife knew some of his stuff). So, after prepping the meats and getting the fires going, we pulled the lawn chairs out front of our site and listened to the concert. As a nice added touch, the organizers along with KCBS reps (Merl and Carol) came around with gourmet pecan-crusted ice cream bars for all the teams to enjoy from a local ice cream place that was vending at the Taste site. A couple of real nice touches like that (the other organizer, John Bates, came around to visit sites at 3:30 am just to make sure everything was okay), showed that they are making headway on making this a top notch contest. They still do not provide power to the teams and generators must be quiet or they'll be forced to be turned off, but overall we had a much better time this 2nd time around. The drive for us from London was about 4.5 hours total, which is definitely manageable (we stopped for groceries and breakfast on the way, and still managed to be onsite by 10ish after leaving at 4 am).
If someone asked if it was a good contest to do, I'd say that if you are not truly needy on power supply, or if you have a quiet generator, definitely give it a thought. The payout isn't all that high (5K total), but then again, neither is the entry (125 regular, ours was 150 with late fee).
