Canada Southern BBQ Championship, Issues of Interest

Post by Iamarealbigdog » Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:46 am

Teams...

I would like to draw your attention to a few issues, and provide words of caution. As of this date we have 7 teams expressing an interest in attending the first Canada Southern BBQ Championship. Unfortunately, only one team has completed their registration. It is past July 15th where the early registration discount has expired, I am surprised at how few teams took advantage of this option. I know many of you are excited and coming, but I need commitments to make the magic happen.

We are taking a slightly different approach then others have in the past. This event will not be a few buddies getting together to see who's cooking floats to the top, it is much more. We are getting the public involved as well as product venders and sponsors. The competition teams are now the stars of an entertainment spectacular. We are bringing locally what people have been only watching on TV. There is an unfulfilled desire for the public to be involved in our community. We need all of you to make this a success; you are the foundation of our overall program.

The expenses of this event, including the prize pool, are made up from registration fees, sampling food to the public, gate admission and of course sponsors. Without team registrations, we do not have a portfolio to show the stakeholders the scope of the event. Teams must register their intent sooner then later. How can we promote the event to the media with only one team? How do we secure a sponsorship packages without public attendance? This all starts with you guys.

On a side note, this is the last Ontario event for a possible Jack Ticket, our competition is scheduled a week after the official Jack draw date. We want to assure the Jack organizers that we have the required 15 teams and we want to request then to hold a spot open for us. This is looking unlikely at this time.

What I am getting at is that we had hoped to secure specific contracts by this time. It is difficult to commit to a competition when you can not get the teams out. Neither Mike Kerslake nor I have the ability to personally funding this event, nor do I expect anybody thinks we should. I do not want to go down this road, but without those pre-registrations and commitments, we will not be able to provide you with minimum services required at this event.

I can not sanction a competition of this size for the purposes of one team.

What the CSBBQ needs is for each individual teams to register and commit to the event by paying their fees. I hope that you will promote this event to other teams and encourage them to register. I sorry to put the onus of this on all of you but it is what it is. I am just as guilty of the wait and see approach, this can not continue. We, as a community, can not continue to procrastinate. The last thing I want to see is another cancelation due to lack of interest on the part of BBQ teams.

I will give this another two weeks, but you guys need to step up. For any team that has paid your fees, 100% of your money is being held in trust. All of the cost so far has been out of my pocket; I can not continue to fund this project without your commitment.

So this means that the showing of logos of the teams registered is merely a showing of those who've said they'll enter?

I would draw your attention to... http://www.bbqtalk.ca/forums/viewtopic. ... 5&start=15

First come first posted. please keep then a reasonable size, I will post on the site. Our plan was to do this once teams had paid their registration, however we are lagging a little behind in setting up the rules and registration.

Once we have the registration and rules set out I will leave a reasonable amount of time for the teams to get their fees in, before we adjust the order of the logos / names.

Thanks for finding and reposting an answer to my query.
I simply could not find the time to search old posts for it.
I also misunderstood 'committment' to mean application sent in with cheque attached.

Again, thanks for the clarification.

You would think that would be a job of a lifetime... unfortunately with the amount of time he puts in there it looking more like a life sentence...

I am pleased he has found a place to hone his skills, I think work is less of a chore for him now. It's just rather difficult trying to find time where he is available. Well I guess you have to make hay when the sun shines.

Thanks Bryan...

Hey Jeff, that's great! Glad you picked ours to be the event where you make your pro debut! You guys have worked hard to get the ribs to a high level of quality and consistency over the last 2-3 yrs; look forward to seeing you start to master the other categories in the pro division.
See ya in St Thomas!
